Understanding the Baseball Heaven Research Model

Baseball Heaven research examines youth sports through historical records, public documents, datasets, financial modeling, firsthand accounts, organizational records, and other available evidence.

This forum exists not only to present research findings, but also to make the methods behind those findings open to examination, criticism, correction, and improvement.

Evidence First. Conclusions Second.

1. Start With the Source

Whenever possible, research should begin with identifiable source material.

Sources may include government records, meeting minutes, contracts, leases, court records, financial documents, organizational records, archived webpages, tournament records, schedules, photographs, videos, contemporaneous correspondence, datasets, interviews, and firsthand historical accounts.

Not all sources carry the same evidentiary weight. A contemporaneous contract, for example, may establish something that a later recollection cannot. At the same time, firsthand recollections may identify events, relationships, terminology, or records that would otherwise never be discovered.

The source should therefore be identified and its limitations understood.

2. Separate Documented Facts From Analysis

Baseball Heaven research may contain several different kinds of information:

Documented fact — directly supported by available evidence.

Calculated result — produced mathematically from identified source data.

Modeled estimate — derived from stated assumptions where complete historical information is unavailable.

Firsthand recollection — information provided by someone with personal experience of an event or system.

Research lead — information suggesting an area requiring additional investigation.

Interpretation — an analytical conclusion drawn from available evidence.

These categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

3. State the Assumptions

Historical youth-sports research frequently involves incomplete records.

When exact information is unavailable, researchers may need to construct models using assumptions concerning matters such as games played, tournament formats, entry fees, gate revenue, umpire compensation, facility costs, staffing, or economic activity.

Those assumptions should be stated clearly enough that another person can understand the calculation, challenge it, substitute a different assumption, and determine how the result changes.

4. Economic Impact Is Not the Same as Revenue

This distinction is fundamental to the Baseball Heaven research model.

Economic impact generally concerns economic activity associated with an event, such as lodging, food, fuel, retail purchases, and other visitor expenditures.

Event or facility revenue concerns money actually received by an operator, organization, facility, or government entity.

A tournament can generate substantial economic activity in a community without producing an equivalent amount of direct revenue for the taxpayer-owned facility hosting it.

These measurements should therefore be identified separately rather than combined.

5. Historical Data Can Change

A dataset is a research product, not an infallible historical record.

Additional teams may be discovered. Duplicate records may be identified. Previously unavailable event information may become accessible. Historical fees may be refined. Records may contradict earlier assumptions.

For that reason, important datasets and reports should identify their version or date whenever practical.

A later corrected dataset should not silently rewrite the research history. Material changes should be documented so researchers can understand what changed and why.

6. Corroboration Strengthens the Record

Important findings should be corroborated whenever possible.

A tournament listing may establish that an event was advertised. A team list may provide participation evidence. Municipal records may establish facility arrangements. Financial records may establish payments. Contemporary participants may provide operational context.

Multiple independent sources can provide a stronger evidentiary foundation than any one source standing alone.

7. Absence of Evidence Requires Care

Failure to locate a record does not automatically establish that an event did not occur, that money was not collected, or that an arrangement did not exist.

It establishes that the particular evidence has not yet been located within the research reviewed.

Researchers should distinguish between “the record shows this did not occur” and “we have not located evidence showing that it occurred.”

8. Reproducibility Matters

Whenever practical, another researcher should be able to understand how a result was produced.

That means documenting:

the source data used;

relevant definitions;

assumptions;

formulas or calculations;

exclusions;

known limitations; and

subsequent corrections.

A result that can be independently examined is more useful than a number that must simply be accepted.

9. Corrections Are Part of the Method

Baseball Heaven research should remain open to correction.

If a source was misunderstood, a calculation is incorrect, a record was omitted, or better evidence becomes available, the appropriate response is to document and correct the record.

Members are encouraged to challenge methodology and findings with evidence.

A correction is not a failure of research. A documented correction is evidence that the research process is working.

10. The Objective

The objective of this forum is not to predetermine what the evidence must prove.

It is to create a research environment in which sources can be located, assumptions can be identified, calculations can be reproduced, competing interpretations can be examined, and conclusions can change when the evidence requires them to change.

Bring the source. Show the method. Explain the assumption. Test the conclusion. Strengthen the record.
