Some of the most valuable research begins with a simple question:

Does anyone have the record?

Baseball Heaven research spans decades of youth-sports activity involving public facilities, community leagues, tournament organizations, sanctioning systems, officials, financial models, historical events, and local government decisions.

No single archive contains all of that history.

Important evidence may exist in municipal files, old tournament records, personal collections, photographs, archived websites, meeting minutes, contracts, newspaper archives, organizational records, or simply in the knowledge of people who were there.

This forum is where we ask for help locating it.

What Is an Open Research Request?

An open research request identifies a specific gap in the existing research and asks members to help locate information that may resolve it.

Requests might seek:

Public records — contracts, leases, meeting minutes, agendas, financial records, fee schedules, facility agreements, reports, audits, correspondence, or government presentations.

Tournament records — schedules, brackets, team lists, entry fees, gate fees, sanction information, event flyers, director information, or historical results.

Facility history — ownership, construction, renovations, leases, user-group agreements, operating arrangements, funding sources, or historical usage.

Organizational history — league records, board minutes, policies, newsletters, registration materials, governance documents, or historical leadership information.

Officials and workforce information — historical pay rates, assignment practices, training requirements, scheduling systems, classifications, staffing models, or firsthand operational knowledge.

Photographs and historical materials — facility photographs, team photographs, programs, advertisements, flyers, scorebooks, newspaper clippings, or other materials that help document a particular period.

Archived digital material — webpages, tournament listings, social-media posts, online schedules, registration pages, or other historical internet records.

Firsthand knowledge — information from people who participated in, administered, officiated, coached, operated, funded, or otherwise directly experienced the system being researched.

How to Post a Research Request

A useful request should be specific enough that another person can recognize what you are looking for.

Consider using this format:

Research question:
Organization/facility/event:
Location:
Approximate year or date range:
Records or information needed:
What we already know:
Why the information matters:
Possible source or records custodian:
Related Baseball Heaven research, if applicable:

You do not need to know all of these details before asking for help.

Historical Knowledge Matters

Not every important fact was preserved in a government database or organizational archive.

Former coaches, league officials, tournament directors, umpires, facility employees, volunteers, parents, players, public employees, and community members may remember how a system actually operated.

That knowledge can be extremely valuable.

However, recollection should be identified as recollection rather than automatically treated as documented fact.

A firsthand account may provide the lead that allows researchers to locate the document that ultimately verifies what occurred.

Tell Us How You Know

When responding to a research request, help other researchers understand the basis of your information.

For example:

“I was personally involved and remember…”

“I have a copy of…”

“The city minutes from state…”

“I found an archived webpage showing…”

“I believe this occurred, but I do not currently have documentation.”

Those distinctions make the information substantially more useful.

A Lead Is Not Yet a Finding

Research requests will sometimes produce information that raises new questions rather than answering the original one.

That is part of the process.

A lead should not be transformed into a factual conclusion until the available evidence supports that conclusion.

Particularly sensitive claims involving identifiable individuals or organizations may require additional corroboration and should not be presented publicly as established facts merely because someone submitted a lead.

Appropriate preliminary material may be moved into the restricted Verified Researcher Workspace for additional examination.

Help Us Locate the Original

Whenever possible, the objective is to locate the underlying source.

If someone remembers a city council discussion, can we locate the minutes or video?

If someone remembers a tournament fee, can we locate the registration page, flyer, receipt, or archived event listing?

If someone remembers a facility agreement, can we obtain the lease or user-group contract?

If a newspaper article references a study, can we locate the study itself?

Each step moves the research from recollection toward a documented historical record.

Unsuccessful Searches Are Useful Too

If you searched a particular archive, agency database, records collection, or date range and did not locate the requested material, that information can also help.

Explain what was searched and, when practical, the period covered.

This can prevent multiple researchers from unknowingly repeating the same search.

An unsuccessful search does not prove that a record never existed. It simply documents where researchers have already looked.

When a Request Is Resolved

If the requested record or information is located, the original topic should be updated so future researchers can see that the request was resolved.

Ideally, the resolution should identify:

What was found

Where it came from

What it establishes

What remains unresolved

Whether the finding affects existing Baseball Heaven research

Some answers will close a research question. Others will create the next one.

Preserve Institutional Memory

Youth-sports history is often lost when volunteers leave, organizations dissolve, websites disappear, facilities change operators, or records are discarded.

This forum is intended to help preserve that institutional memory while people and records are still available.

If you have a record, share the record.

If you know where a record may exist, identify the source.

If you were there, tell us what you remember—and distinguish memory from documentation.

If something does not add up, ask the question.

Every credible lead can help build a more complete historical record.

Primary-source documents are one of the foundations of the Baseball Heaven Research Forum.

Public records, historical documents, contracts, meeting minutes, court filings, policies, financial records, archived webpages, correspondence, photographs, schedules, and similar materials can help establish what happened, when it happened, who was involved, and how youth-sports systems operated.

This forum provides a central location for identifying, preserving, discussing, and evaluating those records.

Whenever possible, bring the source—not just the claim.

What Types of Records Can Be Submitted?

Relevant material may include:

Government records — city, county, school-district, state, or federal documents obtained through public-record requests or public databases.

Meeting records — agendas, minutes, staff reports, presentations, resolutions, ordinances, exhibits, and meeting videos.

Contracts and agreements — leases, user-group agreements, facility-use agreements, operating contracts, tournament agreements, concessions agreements, memoranda of understanding, and amendments.

Financial records — fee schedules, invoices, receipts, payment records, budgets, audits, revenue reports, expenditure records, and other financial documentation lawfully available for research.

Court and administrative records — pleadings, orders, exhibits, docket information, administrative decisions, and other publicly available proceedings.

Youth-sports records — tournament listings, schedules, team lists, standings, sanctioning information, rules, policies, registration materials, historical webpages, and organizational documents.

Historical materials — newspaper articles, programs, photographs, flyers, brochures, scorebooks, correspondence, archived websites, advertisements, and similar records.

Research correspondence — responses from agencies, organizations, researchers, facility operators, or other relevant sources when appropriate to share.

When Posting a Document

Please provide enough information for another researcher to understand where the record came from.

When known, include:

Document title:
Issuing organization or source:
Document date:
Date obtained:
Record-request number or case number, if applicable:
Relevant facility, organization, event, or individual:
Source location or public link:
Brief explanation of why the document matters:

You do not need every field for every submission. Historical materials may not contain complete provenance. Provide what is reasonably known.

Preserve the Original

Whenever practical, preserve the original document before modifying it for presentation.

If highlighting, annotating, cropping, enhancing, converting, or extracting pages from a source document, identify the derivative copy as such and retain the original.

Researchers should be able to distinguish between:

Original source document

Working or annotated copy

Excerpt

Research summary

Analytical interpretation

A summary of a document is not a substitute for the document itself.

Provide Context

A document may be authentic and still be misunderstood if removed from its context.

When relevant, identify what came before or after the document, whether amendments exist, whether it was a draft or final version, the governmental body or organization involved, and whether later records modified the arrangement.

For meeting minutes or videos, identify the meeting date and agenda item when possible.

For contracts and leases, identify the parties, effective period, amendments, and exhibits when available.

Public Record Does Not Mean Every Detail Should Be Republished

Exercise care with personal information contained in source documents.

Records can contain home addresses, personal telephone numbers, personal email addresses, signatures, account information, information about minors, or other details unnecessary to the research question.

Do not unnecessarily republish sensitive personal information simply because it appears in a document.

When appropriate, redact information that is irrelevant to the research while preserving the substantive evidence.

Source Documents vs. Allegations

The existence of a document does not automatically prove every interpretation someone may draw from it.

When discussing a source, distinguish between:

What the document explicitly states

What can be calculated directly from it

What it appears to suggest

What remains unknown

What additional records would be necessary to resolve the question

This distinction is particularly important when documents concern financial activity, governmental decisions, organizations, or identifiable individuals.

Help Establish the Chain of Evidence

If a document was obtained through a public-record request, consider identifying the agency and request date.

If it came from an archived website, identify the original website and approximate capture date.

If it came from your personal historical files, explain briefly how you obtained or retained it.

If another person provided it, identify the source when appropriate and permitted.

The objective is not bureaucracy. It is to make the record understandable and independently examinable years from now.

If You Cannot Upload the Document

You can still create a topic describing the record.

Explain what you have, where it came from, and why you believe it may be relevant. Researchers can then determine whether another copy can be located or whether additional records should be requested.

One Document Can Lead to Another

A useful source often identifies the next research question.

A meeting minute may reference a contract. A contract may reference an exhibit. An exhibit may identify a payment schedule. A payment schedule may lead to financial records. A court filing may identify agreements or correspondence not previously known.

Members are encouraged to identify those connections.

Preserve the source. Identify its origin. Provide the context. Protect unnecessary personal information. Separate the document from the interpretation. Strengthen the historical record.

Baseball Heaven research involves historical records, datasets, calculations, modeled estimates, public documents, archived information, and firsthand accounts. With research of this scale, additional records will be discovered, assumptions will be refined, and errors may occasionally be identified.

Members are encouraged to challenge the data.

The objective is not to defend a number because it has already been published. The objective is to determine what the evidence supports.

This forum may be used to examine:

Dataset entries — teams, events, games, dates, classifications, locations, organizations, directors, facilities, or other recorded information.

Financial calculations — entry fees, gate estimates, sanction fees, officials' compensation, facility revenue, operating costs, or other financial models.

Historical records — discrepancies involving dates, organizations, participants, facilities, tournament histories, or operating arrangements.

Methodological assumptions — assumptions used when complete historical information is unavailable.

Source interpretation — whether a document, record, webpage, interview, or other source supports the conclusion attributed to it.

Duplicates or omissions — records that appear more than once or information that may be missing from a dataset.

How to Submit a Data Challenge

When possible, identify:

1. The specific item being challenged

Explain how the new information could affect the existing record, calculation, methodology, or conclusion.

A Simple Review Format

Members may use this format:

Research item:
Existing data/finding:
Question or proposed correction:
Source/evidence:
Date or period involved:
Reason for proposed change:
Additional records that may be needed:

Disagreement Is Not the Same as Error

Some disputes involve factual questions that can be resolved through records. Others involve assumptions or interpretations for which reasonable researchers may reach different conclusions.

When that occurs, identify the disagreement clearly.

A useful review may conclude:

Confirmed — available evidence supports the existing information.

Corrected — stronger evidence establishes that the existing information should be changed.

Supplemented — the original information remains valid but additional context or evidence should be added.

Unresolved — available evidence is insufficient to determine which interpretation is correct.

Methodological disagreement — the underlying evidence may be accepted while researchers disagree about the appropriate analytical method or assumption.

Version Control Matters

Significant corrections should preserve a record of what changed.

When practical, datasets and major research products should identify their version or date. Material corrections should document the previous value, revised value, reason for the change, and supporting evidence.

This helps prevent corrected data from becoming disconnected from reports or calculations created from an earlier version.

Corrections Should Flow Through the Research

A correction may affect more than one number.

For example, correcting a team count could affect estimated games, officials' assignments, entry-fee totals, gate calculations, facility utilization, or statewide totals.

Researchers should therefore consider the downstream effects of a correction rather than changing an isolated figure without reconciling related calculations.

Preliminary Information vs. Established Evidence

A possible discrepancy is not automatically proof that previously published information is wrong.

Likewise, a research lead, allegation, or recollection should not be presented as an established fact merely because it raises a legitimate question.

Potentially sensitive or insufficiently corroborated material involving identifiable people or organizations should be handled carefully and, where appropriate, examined within the restricted Verified Researcher Workspace before broader publication.

Corrections Strengthen the Record

Members should not hesitate to identify mistakes—even significant ones.

Baseball Heaven research should be capable of changing when better evidence becomes available.

Find the discrepancy. Provide the evidence. Reproduce the calculation. Document the correction. Strengthen the record.

Baseball Heaven research examines youth sports through historical records, public documents, datasets, financial modeling, firsthand accounts, organizational records, and other available evidence.

This forum exists not only to present research findings, but also to make the methods behind those findings open to examination, criticism, correction, and improvement.

Evidence First. Conclusions Second.

1. Start With the Source

Whenever possible, research should begin with identifiable source material.

Sources may include government records, meeting minutes, contracts, leases, court records, financial documents, organizational records, archived webpages, tournament records, schedules, photographs, videos, contemporaneous correspondence, datasets, interviews, and firsthand historical accounts.

Not all sources carry the same evidentiary weight. A contemporaneous contract, for example, may establish something that a later recollection cannot. At the same time, firsthand recollections may identify events, relationships, terminology, or records that would otherwise never be discovered.

The source should therefore be identified and its limitations understood.

2. Separate Documented Facts From Analysis

Baseball Heaven research may contain several different kinds of information:

Documented fact — directly supported by available evidence.

Calculated result — produced mathematically from identified source data.

Modeled estimate — derived from stated assumptions where complete historical information is unavailable.

Firsthand recollection — information provided by someone with personal experience of an event or system.

Research lead — information suggesting an area requiring additional investigation.

Interpretation — an analytical conclusion drawn from available evidence.

These categories should not be treated as interchangeable.

3. State the Assumptions

Historical youth-sports research frequently involves incomplete records.

When exact information is unavailable, researchers may need to construct models using assumptions concerning matters such as games played, tournament formats, entry fees, gate revenue, umpire compensation, facility costs, staffing, or economic activity.

Those assumptions should be stated clearly enough that another person can understand the calculation, challenge it, substitute a different assumption, and determine how the result changes.

4. Economic Impact Is Not the Same as Revenue

This distinction is fundamental to the Baseball Heaven research model.

Economic impact generally concerns economic activity associated with an event, such as lodging, food, fuel, retail purchases, and other visitor expenditures.

Event or facility revenue concerns money actually received by an operator, organization, facility, or government entity.

A tournament can generate substantial economic activity in a community without producing an equivalent amount of direct revenue for the taxpayer-owned facility hosting it.

These measurements should therefore be identified separately rather than combined.

5. Historical Data Can Change

A dataset is a research product, not an infallible historical record.

Additional teams may be discovered. Duplicate records may be identified. Previously unavailable event information may become accessible. Historical fees may be refined. Records may contradict earlier assumptions.

For that reason, important datasets and reports should identify their version or date whenever practical.

A later corrected dataset should not silently rewrite the research history. Material changes should be documented so researchers can understand what changed and why.

6. Corroboration Strengthens the Record

Important findings should be corroborated whenever possible.

A tournament listing may establish that an event was advertised. A team list may provide participation evidence. Municipal records may establish facility arrangements. Financial records may establish payments. Contemporary participants may provide operational context.

Multiple independent sources can provide a stronger evidentiary foundation than any one source standing alone.

7. Absence of Evidence Requires Care

Failure to locate a record does not automatically establish that an event did not occur, that money was not collected, or that an arrangement did not exist.

It establishes that the particular evidence has not yet been located within the research reviewed.

Researchers should distinguish between “the record shows this did not occur” and “we have not located evidence showing that it occurred.”

8. Reproducibility Matters

Whenever practical, another researcher should be able to understand how a result was produced.

That means documenting:

the source data used;

relevant definitions;

assumptions;

formulas or calculations;

exclusions;

known limitations; and

subsequent corrections.

A result that can be independently examined is more useful than a number that must simply be accepted.

9. Corrections Are Part of the Method

Baseball Heaven research should remain open to correction.

If a source was misunderstood, a calculation is incorrect, a record was omitted, or better evidence becomes available, the appropriate response is to document and correct the record.

Members are encouraged to challenge methodology and findings with evidence.

A correction is not a failure of research. A documented correction is evidence that the research process is working.

10. The Objective

The objective of this forum is not to predetermine what the evidence must prove.

It is to create a research environment in which sources can be located, assumptions can be identified, calculations can be reproduced, competing interpretations can be examined, and conclusions can change when the evidence requires them to change.

Bring the source. Show the method. Explain the assumption. Test the conclusion. Strengthen the record.

One of the strengths of this project is the experience and knowledge people bring from different parts of youth sports. This forum is a place to introduce yourself and tell the community what brought you here.

You do not need to provide a résumé or disclose information you would rather keep private. A brief introduction is enough.

Consider including:

Your name — Please use a recognizable form of your real name consistent with the forum's membership standards.

General location — City, state, region, or another general description is sufficient. Please do not post a home address or other sensitive personal information.

Your youth-sports background — Player, parent, coach, official, tournament director, league administrator, facility operator, researcher, public official, volunteer, or another role.

Sports or organizations you've been involved with — Baseball, softball, football, basketball, Little League, travel sports, school athletics, recreational programs, or other youth-sports systems.

Your areas of interest — Public facilities, tournament economics, officials, governance, historical records, community baseball, travel sports, public records, research methodology, or another subject.

What brought you here — Tell us what you hope to learn, contribute, research, document, or better understand.

What knowledge or records might you contribute? — Historical experience, photographs, tournament records, meeting minutes, contracts, datasets, archived materials, firsthand knowledge, or other information can all help preserve and strengthen the historical record.

A simple introduction might look like this:

My name is ________. I'm from ________ and have been involved in youth sports as a ________. My primary interests are ________. I joined the Baseball Heaven Research Forum because ________. I'm particularly interested in learning more about / contributing information concerning ________.

Different Perspectives Are Welcome

You do not have to agree with Baseball Heaven's research findings to participate.

Coaches, parents, officials, tournament operators, league administrators, public officials, researchers, facility operators, volunteers, and others may view the same issues differently. Those perspectives can be valuable when they are presented professionally and when factual claims are supported with evidence whenever possible.

The goal is not agreement for its own sake. The goal is a stronger and more complete record.

Tell us who you are, what experience you bring, and what brought you to the Baseball Heaven Research Forum.

The Baseball Heaven Research Forum is a collaborative research community dedicated to the study of youth sports governance, public facilities, economics, tournament and sanctioning systems, officials and workforce development, community baseball, travel sports, historical records, and public accountability.

This forum extends the research published through Baseball Heaven by creating a place where participants can examine evidence, contribute historical knowledge, identify records, challenge assumptions, propose case studies, and help strengthen the accuracy of the research.

Evidence First. Conclusions Second.

That principle should guide discussion throughout this forum.

Members are encouraged to question findings, identify errors, provide contrary evidence, propose alternative interpretations, and request additional documentation. A disagreement supported by evidence is valuable to the research process.

Know What Kind of Information You Are Sharing

Whenever possible, distinguish among:

Documented fact — information supported directly by a primary or reliable source.

Modeled estimate — a calculation based upon stated assumptions or methodology.

Personal recollection — information based upon firsthand experience or memory that may require additional corroboration.

Research lead — information that may warrant investigation but has not yet been independently verified.

Interpretation — an analysis or conclusion drawn from available evidence that may reasonably be debated.

These distinctions are particularly important when discussing financial activity, organizations, public agencies, facilities, tournament operators, officials, or identifiable individuals.

Primary Sources Matter

Members are encouraged to provide source material whenever possible, including public records, meeting minutes, contracts, leases, financial documents, court records, policies, archived webpages, tournament records, photographs, historical documents, datasets, and other materials relevant to the research.

When submitting evidence, identify where it came from, the approximate date, and any important context necessary to understand it.

Corrections Are Part of the Research

Baseball Heaven research is intended to remain open to correction.

If you identify an incorrect number, missing record, questionable assumption, duplicate entry, methodological problem, or evidence contradicting a published finding, raise it. Provide the supporting evidence when available.

A documented correction strengthens the research.

Unverified Allegations

Do not present allegations, rumors, suspicions, or preliminary research leads as established facts.

Material involving potentially significant claims about identifiable people or organizations should be supported by appropriate evidence. Preliminary material requiring additional examination may be better suited for the restricted Verified Researcher Workspace rather than the public forum.

Professional Discussion

Debate the evidence and methodology rather than attacking the person presenting it.

Participants should remain professional, avoid harassment and personal attacks, respect legitimate privacy concerns, and refrain from publishing sensitive personal information that is not necessary to the research.

The Research Forum Is a Working Record

Some questions discussed here may eventually become case studies, research summaries, corrections, datasets, public-record requests, policy discussions, or other Baseball Heaven research products.

The purpose is not to require everyone to reach the same conclusion. The purpose is to create a documented environment where evidence can be examined, challenged, corrected, preserved, and better understood.

Where to Begin

New members should introduce themselves in Introductions and identify their general background, youth-sports experience or area of interest, and what they hope to contribute or learn.

From there, use the forum that most closely matches the subject of your discussion.

If you possess historical records, documents, photographs, firsthand knowledge, datasets, or other evidence that may contribute to this research, we encourage you to participate.

Welcome to the Baseball Heaven Research Forum.

Read the evidence. Ask questions. Contribute knowledge. Strengthen the record.
